The Goessel High School Bluebirds found themselves in the loser's bracket with a first round loss to Sedgwick on Monday evening.
Their second round opponent was another league foe — Remington. The Goessel boys jumped ahead of the Broncos in the first quarter and remained ahead at half-time by a score of 23-28.
The Bluebirds continued to lead at the end of each quarter and won by a score of 61-52. Balanced scoring helped the Bluebirds, as four players reached double digits.
Ryan Janzen led the way with 15 points. Justin Fensky made 12; Nicholas Peters and Josh Schmidt, 10 each; Garrett Hiebert, six; Aaron Stehman, four; Travis Buller and Jordan Voth, two each.
In their third game of the tournament, the Bluebirds faced a tall team from Belle Plaine. Goessel fell behind early, but Fensky put in the first seven points for the Bluebirds.
Goessel trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter and were behind by 13 at half time. Twenty points in the fourth quarter helped, but the deficit was too big to overcome as Goessel lost 69-57.
Fensky had a season high 16 points. Janzen followed with 15, J. Schmidt with nine, Hiebert and Stehman with five each, J. Voth with four, and N. Peters with three.
This week's activities brought the boys' record to 4-9 for the season.
Goessel boys will play on Friday in a home game with Burrton. The B-team boys will play at 6:30 and the varsity at 8 p.m.
Girls play at Berean
The girls will be competing in the Berean Tournament this week. Their first game was against Burrton, the third time these teams have played this season. The second round will be on Thursday, and the final game will be Saturday. The girls entered the tournament as the seventh seed.
