Goessel boys fall at sub-state
Goessel's 63-70 loss in the semi final game of Sub-state turned out to be closer than most Centralia fans expected as the 13-10 Bluebird boys faced the 23-0 Panthers.
Kent Peters and Jesse Goertzen each scored six points in the first quarter as Goessel jumped out to a 16-9 lead causing the Centralia coach to call a time out to regroup with 2:35 to play in the first quarter. The Panthers closed the gap as Goessel led by 18-17 by the end of the quarter.
The Bluebirds only managed nine points in the second quarter compared to the 17 scored by the Panthers, and Goessel trailed at half-time 34-27.
Clinton Plenert and Jeremy Voth were the only Bluebirds to score in the third quarter as Goessel cut the deficit to five with 4:16 to play.
The quickness of the Panther guards showed in the fourth quarter as the favored team stretched their lead 59-45 with 3:49 to play in the game. Back to back three pointers for Peters and Goertzen and a lay-up by Voth brought the score to 59-53. Goessel would not be able to get any closer than that, as they had to foul in order to stop the clock, and Centralia was able to convert 8 of 10 free-throws to seal their victory 70-63.
Scoring for the Bluebirds in the final game of the season were Jeremy Voth with 20 points, Jesse Goertzen with 16, Kent Peters with 13, Clinton Plenert with 12, and Aaron Stehman with two. Goessel ended the season with a 13-11 record.
