Friday the Bluebirds picked up a 47-46 win at Central Christian in Hutchinson.
The Cougars scored 21 of their first half points from "three-point land" and Goessel trailed 17-25 at halftime.
Goessel made adjustments at halftime and narrowed the gap in the third quarter with tremendous effort by Aaron Stehman.
Although the Bluebirds connected on only four of 11 freethrows, a combined team effort in the fourth quarter kept the game close and allowed Ryan Janzen to put in the game-winning basket with a few seconds left on the clock.
For the Bluebirds, Josh Schmidt led with 12 points, Aaron Stehman canned 11 points, Ryan Janzen had eight, Nicholas Peters and Justin Fensky had seven each, and Tyler Schroeder had two points before injuring his foot.
This was the first win in the Heart of America League for Goessel.
Tuesday saw the high school boys lose a hard fought battle at Remington 54-64.
In this game, Stehman led the team in scoring with 12. J. Schmidt had 11; Fensky, eight; Schroeder, seven; Janzen, six; Peters, five; Jordan Voth, four; and Garrett Hiebert, one.
The Bluebirds converted 13 of 20 freethrows, but could not get past the Broncos.
Monday, Jan 19, was the first game of the Canton-Galva Tournament. Goessel got off to a quick start and had streaks of offense during the game, but an 8-0 run by Sedgwick to start the third quarter caught Goessel off guard.
The Bluebirds got behind 31-45 with 2:22 left in the third quarter and then reeled off a 12-2 run of their own behind the scoring of Ryan Janzen, to cut the deficit to four, 43-47.
The Cardinals got restarted and finished the game, winning 60-48. Janzen shot 85 percent from the field for a season high 23 points and eight rebounds.
Stehman knocked down nine points, J. Schmidt and Hiebert had four each, Fensky and Voth had three each, and Travis Buller had two points.
The Bluebirds are now 1-5 in league play and 3-8 overall.
Goessel will play again at Canton today at 4:45 p.m. and then on Friday afternoon.
The next home game for the boys will be on Friday, Jan. 30, with Burrton.
