The Goessel boys are playing well in the heart of the season and hope to continue their winning ways this week at Moundridge and Remington.

With five games to play in the Heart of America League, the Bluebirds began the week 6-0, but know the basketball games this week are always tough games on the road.

Goessel needed another strong fourth quarter at home against 1A Little River, to put away their 12th win in a row.

The Redskins came up with a tough first quarter and led 14-13, but the visitors only scored nine points in the second quarter and the Bluebirds went into halftime with a 27-23 lead.

Jordan Voth had 11 points in the first half and added 12 points in the second half to lead the Bluebirds to a 71-51 win. Travis Buller hit 11 points, Garrett Hiebert had 11, Nathan Ensz scored seven, Brett Goerzen hit seven, Nathan Amstutz scored four, Sheldon Goerzen hit four, Austin Unruh two, and Kendall Voth two.

The championship trophy belonged to the Goessel Bluebirds after a 57-55 win at the Burrton Basketball Tournament.

The snow-delayed game was played Jan. 22 and Central Christian, with no losses yet this season, was hoping to keep its record unblemished.

The battle was a test of nerves as both teams were whistled with fouls that they were not accustomed to. Although no player fouled out, three Bluebirds suffered four fouls and limited playing time.

The Bluebirds scored 21 points in the second period and took a 32-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Cougars battled back to tie the game at the end of three periods, 45-45. Central Christian put up 21 three-pointers and only connected on five of them, allowing the Bluebirds to gather in 31 rebounds compared to 21 rebounds for the Cougars.

Goessel missed a disappointing nine free throws which allowed Central Christian to stay close. In the end, Goessel held on to win this classic battle.

Senior Nathan Amstutz stepped up his game to score 17 points for the Bluebirds in the championship game. Hiebert finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Buller had nine points, S. Goerzen canned seven, Ensz and A. Unruh each had four points, J. Voth made three, and B. Goerzen had four assists to go along with one point.
