In a league with three 3A schools and four 2A schools, Goessel High School, the only 1A team, finished in sixth place for both the boys' and girls' teams.

Kristen Hoffman finished the course in 17 minutes, three seconds with a fifth-place medal out of 57 competitors.

Sara Boman 18:58, Lindsey Wedel 19:14, Shanna Klassen 20:28, Jessika Jesse, 23:20, and Raney Schroeder, rounded out the rest of the varsity team.

The boys' team had 11 runners and was led this week by Jared Reimer with a time of 19:57.

The boys' race had 67 participants with Reimer earning 21st.

Other runners for GHS included: Johnathan Berkholz 20:02, Laird Goertzen 20:23, Chad Wedel 21:06, Isaac Fast 21:42, Anthony Esau 21:44, Jake Schrag 22:08, Chris Johnston 22:11, Derek Kruger 23:35, Travis Duerksen 25:49, and Matt Johnston 26:02.

Goessel will participate in the 1A regional cross country meet Saturday at the Cessna Activity Center in Wichita.

The top three teams advance to state, with a possibility of other individuals qualifying as well.

Coach Greg Bontrager spent some time trying to figure out Goessel's chances of advancing to state.

"I don't know what to expect from our teams since we always run against larger schools," he said. "We might actually be competitive when we get together with other 1A schools."
