After flattening Flint Hills 60-48 last week, the Goessel Bluebirds face two tough eight-man opponents back to back. The first test comes at home at 7 p.m. Friday against Burrton.
Goessel is now 3-1 as the important district competition for the eight man football class begins. Burrton comes off a 28 point win at Attica.
"Every game is important in the playoffs," said coach Justin Coup. "You can't afford to lose and hope other teams will help you out. This will be a tough district."
Claflin is the only team in the district that has not lost. Little River, Burrton, and Goessel are all 3-1, and Centre is 2-2. Goessel travels Oct. 6 to Little River.
As for last week's game against Flint Hills, eight touchdowns in one game should mean a rout, but when you allow the other team seven touchdowns, it's still a close game.
After rushing to a 16-0 first quarter lead, the Bluebirds traded touchdowns with Flint Hills in a game that seemed more like a track meet, as the teams combined for a whopping 915 yards of total offense.
Quarterback Garrett Hiebert led Goessel with four touchdowns, rushing 204 yards on nine carries. Brett Goerzen added three touchdowns, rushing 126 yards on three carries. Travis Butler scored a touchdown with 33 yards on 12 carries.
Hiebert also completed four of 11 for 46 yards in the air. Brett Goerzen caught four passes for 46 yards.
Goessel piled up 454 yards on offense, but allowed Flint Hills 461 yards.
"We have to get better on defense," said Coup. "I think our offense hurt our defense tonight. The offense scored quickly so many times on long plays, and the defense had to get right back on the field."
