Goessel High School football team won in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 1 but lost a heartbreaker Saturday to Pike Valley.

The loss against Pike Valley ended in overtime, as the two evenly matched teams made a close game throughout the contest.

Regulation ended with Goessel attempting a field goal with the score tied at 28. The kick was long enough but just wide and the regional game was settled in overtime.

Pike Valley had possession of the ball first and was able to cross the goal line and converted the two-point conversion, making the score 36-28.

Goessel was able to move the ball to the one-yard line, but Pike Valley's defense held the Bluebirds out of the end zone on running plays and an incomplete pass ended the season for the Bluebirds with a record of 8-3.

Pike Valley, now 11-0, will face 11-0 Hope.

In the first round the Bluebirds advanced to the elite group of eight teams remaining in Division 1 of the eight-man football category. Forty-eight teams began district play, but the Bluebirds proved they were worthy of advancing as they beat previously undefeated Southern Coffey County High School, 48-20, Nov. 1.

In the first quarter, Garrett Hiebert and Adam Goering scored giving GHS a 14-0 lead.

Hiebert connected with Chad Schrag on a 32-yard pass play for a score and Southern Coffey County was able to score before halftime leaving the Bluebirds in a comfortable lead of 20-8.

Goessel scored twice in the third quarter with Brett Goerzen on the receiving end of a 14-yard pass and Justin Fensky ran one in from three yards.

In the final period, Goering took the ball across the goal line from the one yard line making the score 42-14. Near the end of the game, the Bluebird younger players got a chance to hold their own in the playoff game.

Travis Buller converted a one-yard plunge and the final score of this bi-district championship game ended at 48-20.

Bubba Holder was harassing the quarterback on defense with two sacks while the linebackers and ends were stopping the Southern Coffey offense. The Bluebirds' defense forced nine punts in the game as Goessel dominated the previously 9-0 team.
