Goessel High School football team lost its first game of the season Friday to a larger Claflin squad.

Goessel recovered a fumble in the first half to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone, as the two teams went into the half tied at zero.

Goessel scored first in the third quarter on a 38-yard pass from Austin Unruh to Weston Hiebert.

However, Claflin scored twice in the third quarter to take a 16-6 lead.

Unruh connected with Craig Banman for another touchdown to get the Bluebirds within four points at 16-12.

The larger Claflin team punched the ball across the goal line in the fourth quarter for the only score in the period.

Goessel lost this District 5 game 24-12.

The Wildcats have secured a spot at the bi-district level and Goessel will have to defeat 0-7 Centre Thursday in order to be sure of a spot at the next level.
