Goessel High School dominated the game Friday against Cedar Vale 48-6, for its first win at home.
Although Cedar Vale scored on its first series, it was the Bluebirds that came back and crossed the goal line with ease.
Justin Fensky broke loose for 61 yards on the first offensive play for the Bluebirds. His kick was good giving the Bluebirds a 7-6 lead. On their next offensive possession, Garrett Hiebert found Chad Schrag open for a 36-yard pass play for a touchdown.
Another long run by Fensky got the ball to the one-yard line and Travis Buller carried the ball into the end zone untouched. The first quarter ended with Goessel ahead 19-6.
Fensky shook off several tacklers and took a pitch around the right side for a 20-yard touchdown. Fensky broke for another touchdown, but had the run called back due to a penalty. The offensive line was making holes and Adam Goering managed several long gains down the field, with Travis Buller taking the pigskin across the goal line from the two-yard line. The two-point conversion was good on a pass play from Hiebert to Schrag.
Kurtis Duerksen recovered a fumble in the Broncos backfield and it looked like the Bluebirds had an opportunity to set up another strike but the clock ran out at halftime before they could move across the goal line. Goessel led at the half by 33-6.
Chad Schrag began the second half by returning the kickoff to the Bronco 26-yard line. Several plays later Hiebert found Kyle Unruh open on a pass play, and Unruh dragged players with him as he stretched across the goal line. Adam Goering successfully ran in the extra point.
With 8:10 remaining in the third quarter, Hiebert faked to his running back, and found himself wide open along the left flat and coasted in for another score from 35 yards out. Fensky kicked the extra point and the Bluebirds led 48-6.
The coaches emptied the bench and let the younger Bluebirds finish the game. Cedar Vale scored on a pass play, but the rest of the game was fairly even. Austin Unruh, Dustin Peterson, and Sheldon Goerzen all had good gains on plays from scrimmage. Grady Stultz, Kurtis Duerksen, Craig Banman and Nick Cooper had stops on defense during the last part of the game.
Goessel will play Friday at Argonia.
