Goessel girls end league season by bring home two victories

Goessel High School girls' basketball team scored 23 points in the third quarter Feb. 14 to set the stage for a victory at Hope.
After leading 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, Goessel found themselves trailing at halftime, 24-19. An explosive third quarter propelled the Bluebirds to 42-28 before holding on to win, 51-44.
Scoring for the Bluebirds were Kory Hiebert with 15, Rinda Duerksen 12, Courtney Berkholz nine, Brittany Dirksen five, Katie Flaming four, Trenae Wilson four, and Caitlin Goertzen two.
The Bluebirds ended their league season Friday with a home game against Sedgwick.
Goessel came out scoring with a 15-7 lead at the end of one quarter. Although the Cardinals cut into the lead by halftime, the Bluebirds still led, 23-19.
GHS outscored Sedgwick in the second half by four points to win, 46-38. Freshman Rinda Duerksen tossed in 23 points with the help of 13 free throws.
Hiebert scored 10, Wilson five, Berkholz four, and Dirksen and Flaming each had two points.
Goessel will play Tuesday at Little River in the 1A regional tournament as a number five seed.
The victors of this game will go to Burrton Friday for a game at 6 p.m. against Olpe.
Goessel has an overall record of 9-11 with a Heart of America record of 4-7.
