Goessel girls win two and lose one

The Goessel High School girls' basketball team earned fifth place at the tournament in Berean. Monday, the Bluebirds played Burrton in the first round and lost a battle after getting behind early in the game. In a game with 50 fouls called, the Bluebirds connected on 14 of 26 free throws. Falling behind by 13 points at the end of the first quarter, created a deficit that the Bluebirds would overcome in the fourth quarter, but saw the Chargers come back to win by three points, 48-45.

Korey Hiebert scored 17, Courtney Berkholz nine, Trenae Wilson eight, Katie Flaming four, Candice Bailey three, Felicia Goertzen three, and Linessa Duerksen one.

Goessel dominated Thursday's game with a 50-5 win against former league opponent Central Christian from Hutchinson. The Bluebirds led 32-3 at half-time and the defense kept Central Christian scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Bailey led in scoring with 11 points, followed by Hiebert with 10, Berkholz eight, Kara Klassen six, Brittany Dirksen six, Duerksen four, Caitlin Goertzen two, Wilson two, and Flaming one.

Goessel played Peabody for fifth place in the Berean tournament. Goessel led 18-11 by half time, and defeated the Warrior team for the third time this season by a final score of 35-23.

Hiebert led all scorers with 15, F. Goertzen nine, Bailey five, Berkholz four, Duerksen and Klassen one point each.

The Bluebird record is now 7-6 and the boys and girls teams played Trinity Tuesday and will play Sedgwick Friday.
