Goessel girls win two this past week
Goessel High School girls' basketball team pulled out a 48-36 victory Jan. 3 with a good third quarter against cross county rival Peabody-Burns.
With the Warriors leading by two at half time, Goessel attacked inside using their height as an advantage. When 6-1 junior Kory Hiebert was double-teamed, the Bluebirds found freshman Rinda Duerksen open around the bucket most of the time.
A Brittany Dirksen three-pointer finished off a 19-4 run in the third quarter which gave the Bluebirds a 32-19 lead in the third quarter. The two teams traded baskets for most of the fourth quarter.
"Our high-low game worked much better in the second half," head coach Brian Holloway said.
Kory Hiebert finished with 17 points, Rinda Duerksen 15, Courtney Berkholz six, Brittany Dirksen five, Trenae Wilson four, and Jennifer Raymond one. Jessi Hilliard led the scoring for Peabody-Burns with 19.
Goessel hit seven of eight free throws late in the game Friday to seal a victory against Bennington. Although GHS led by six at halftime, it opened up a 13-point lead with a quick start in the third period.
Bennington forced several turnovers and got as close as 28-22 in the fourth period, but the Bluebirds were satisfied to run the clock down and converted at the free-throw line late in the game.
The team used balanced scoring during the game. Hiebert led the team with 10 points, Duerksen nine, Berkholz seven, Dirksen five, and Wilson and Katie Flaming each had four points.
Goessel is now 2-1 in league play and 4-4 overall. The Bluebirds played Tuesday at Berean and travel Friday to Inman.
