It was a "brutal, windy day of golf" at Kinsley May 12, but the six Goessel High School golfers put up with the elements as well as anyone and came home with the championship plaque for the 1A regional tournament.
"Our guys prevailed," said head coach Greg Bontrager.
The scores of 91 for both Cameron Voth and Nathan Ensz were 10 strokes higher than they would have liked, but it still earned them second and third places individually.
Tyler Schmidt was not far behind with a round of 94 and seventh best individually.
Derek Brown came in with a 106, Hayden Goerzen shot 108, and Jake Schrag came off the course with a 109.
It was one stroke that gave the Bluebirds the championship as the top four rounds added together equaled 382 for Goessel, and 383 for Quivera Heights.
All six Goessel players got a chance to perform Monday at Dodge City Country Club at the 1A state competition.
Sixty-five golfers from 12 teams competed for the team and individual scores, and 23 other golfers competed on an individual level.
The golfers with the best scores from regionals were the last to tee off at the state tournament.
Two spots on the varsity team opened up, due to graduation and Schrag earned one spot for his senior year along with sophomore Goerzen.
Voth, Ensz, Schmidt, and Brown all gained experience in the state meet last year as well.
State results will be available in next week's issue.
