The Goessel High School football Bluebirds left no doubt about it Friday, as they romped and rollicked to a 40-8 win at Little River and the Heart of America eight-man division crown.
The win gives the Bluebirds a 5-1 record and two big victories in District 5 competition.
The team plays host at 7 p.m. Friday in a non-district game against lowly Sunrise Christian (1-5), which posted its first win of the season last week.
In a game of no importance, the Bluebirds hope to play well and stay healthy for the remaining games in district play.
Goessel will finish the regular season Oct. 20 at home against top-seeded Claflin, then travels Oct. 26 to Lost Springs to face Centre.
Against Little River, Brett Goerzen ran for two touchdowns and Garrett Hiebert passed to Travis Buller for a two-point conversion to give Goessel a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
In the second period, Sheldon Goerzen took the ball 27 yards for a score. B. Goerzen followed shortly after with an 8-yard run, then S. Goerzen gathered in a Hiebert pass for a 17-yard touchdown. Goessel led at the half, 34-0.
In the fourth quarter, Zach Frey scored from the one, giving the Bluebirds a 40-0 lead. Little River scored in the waning minutes of the game.
