The Goessel boys' basketball team advanced to the finals of the Burrton Tournament this past weekend by defeating Little River and Burrton.

The snowstorm that blanketed the area over the weekend forced the championship game between the Bluebirds and Hutchinson Central Christian to be played Monday night.

The Little River Redskins proved to be a competitive team and stayed close to the Bluebirds through three quarters.

Goessel led by seven, 38-31, but then the long-range shots began falling for the Bluebirds as they outscored Little River 26-9 in the final period and won by a lopsided score of 64-40.

The scoring was very balanced as four Bluebirds reached double figures. Travis Buller led with 14 points, Nathan Amstutz 12, Garrett Hiebert 12, Jordan Voth 12, Brett Goerzen eight, and Sheldon Goerzen six.

Quick Brett Goerzen led the team with four steals, Hiebert gathered in 10 rebounds. Although the Bluebirds missed eight free throws, the explosion of points in the fourth quarter pleased the coaches.

In the semifinal game Thursday, the Bluebirds prevailed, 45-38 with a solid fourth quarter, and forced 21 turnovers in the contest.

The Goessel boys will face Little River at 6 p.m. Friday at home
