Feb. 12 will be the state competition for Scholars Bowl for 1A schools. Goessel's team will travel to Centre High School for their chance to advance through a competition of sixteen 1A schools.

On Feb. 3, Goessel lost one match in pool play and then went undefeated in finals to win the regional event at Tescott.

"Goessel played three matches in the final round and won one of those matches with an overtime question. Since going to state last year, this was a real achievement for this year's team," said coach Bruce Stucky.

Thirteen teams were represented at Tescott and only the top two teams advanced to state. From the Tescott regional, Morrowville-North Central will advance with Goessel.

Garrett Hiebert, Adam Goering, Janessa Wedel, and brothers Ryan and Evan Janzen will make up the Bluebird brain trust.

In a variety of subjects, the contestants try to "buzz in" first, in order to have a chance to correctly answer questions and earn points for the team. The competition will begin with eight teams in each pool competing against all the other schools in their pool.

The top two teams in Pool A will advance to a finals round against the top two teams in Pool B. Along with Goessel, Pool B will consist of Ashland, Bucklin, Chetopa, Claflin, Grinnell, Centre, and Greeley County.

Stucky will encourage the team to practice early in the week so they will be prepared for the competition on Wednesday.
