Goessel scholars' bowl team wins HOA league

The Goessel High School scholars' bowl team recently took home the championship trophy from the Heart of America League meet at Remington High School. Eleven teams competed for the league title.

Each team was allowed four players to compete at one time in different matches. Goessel brought five varsity players and rotated people in so that all five got a chance to compete.

Players for the Goessel team were sophomore Anthony Esau, junior Matt Johnston, and seniors Garrett Hiebert, Janessa Wedel, and Jennifer Krehbiel.

League teams were divided into two pools and Goessel played everyone in their pool. The top two teams after five matches advanced to the semifinal round where Goessel, a 1A school defeated Remington, the host 3A school, 70-40. In the championship match, the Bluebirds won a narrow victory, 40-30, over Peabody-Burns.

The next match for the Bluebirds will be the 1A regional tournament Feb. 1 at Randolph in the Blue Valley High School, north of Manhattan.

Although Goessel will compete against other 1A schools, it doesn't mean the competition will be easier than the league meet.

There will be 12 schools assigned to the regional meet and 16 teams from eight different regional meets will move on to the state competition. The Bluebirds hope to be one of those teams Feb. 10 at Spearville.
