Goessel sewers to be flushed

County Commissioner Bob Hein attended the Goessel City Council meeting July 18 and informed the council that the commissioners are in the process of purchasing the transfer station in Marion. According to Hein, the county commission is waiting on a report from GSI for possible ground contamination. Hein assured the council that the county will work together with cities on the solid waste issue.

According to public works director Arlen Goertzen, utility maintenance contractors will flush the sewer lines in the east end of town and door hangers have been distributed to the homes that will be affected.

The council requested that Goertzen get a cost estimate for rehabilitating two manholes that are located in the creek. Goertzen informed the council of some new regulations concerning source water assessment.

The police activity report included two harassment reports, one criminal threat report, one domestic battery arrest, two reported burglaries, two warnings for stop sign violations, one warning for speeding, two notices to appear for speeding, one notice to appear for no insurance and one notice to appear for no brake lights.

The council approved sending Arlen and Anita Goertzen to Topeka on Aug. 9 for the Right of Way Management Summit training session.

The council approved sending Anita Goertzen to Larned on Aug. 23 to attend the municipal leadership academy on Effective Municipal Courts.

The council discussed a letter from attorney Bob Brookens concerning the increase in mowing fees for property that is in violation of the weed ordinance.

The council discussed obtaining an easement for the walking bridge between Elton Nickel's property and Ratzlaff Automotive and ADA requirements for a walking bridge.

The council reviewed a request from Mid-Kansas Co-op to extend Osage Street north to Centennial Street. They also reviewed an audit agreement with Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd for an annual audit and budget preparation.

Other items approved by the council included the following:

— approved 4-0 to grant Joe Foudray a variance to the dog limit for one year provided he gets signatures from all the adjoining neighbors.

— approved 3-1 to have Goessel police officers pursue being deputized with the county.

— approved 4-0 to accept Street Light Resolution G-41.

— approved 4-0 to purchase a one-year service contract with Xerox.

— approved 4-0 to proceed with the franchise ordinance with the Moundridge Phone Company.

— approved 3-1 to send a letter of intent to Melanie Thrower to retain her engineering services with a guarantee to pay the cost of the preliminary service up to $2,000.
