Goessel High School sent four teams Oct. 7 to the sixth annual Kansas Eco-Meet in Salina. The teams took first, third, seventh, and ninth places.
The meet is an academic competition in the areas of environmental science and biology. Students are placed into teams of four and compete in four events. The Salina regional was one of 10 statewide regional events this year. Evan Janzen, Jared Unrau, Jared Unruh, and Tanner Dickerson made up Team A.
"These guys are our most experienced group and they did a great job at our regional!" said Don Dailey, Goessel High School Eco-Meet Coach.
The team finished first. Dickerson placed first overall in the wildlife event, and Unruh placed third in the herpetology event.
Team D included freshmen Travis Duerksen, Aleesha Hines, Chris Johnston, and Matt Johnston. They finished third and also will compete at the state meet.
"I know this group put in a lot of time preparing for this event and it sure paid off for them." said coach Dailey.
Team B included Jason Hall, Trenae Wilson, Jennifer Krehbiel, and Evan Esau. Team C members were Alex Drake, Jake Meeks, William Holder, and Brandon Harvey. Team B finished ninth. Team C finished seventh.
"I was pleased with our school performance, all four teams in the top half, considering we competed against schools much bigger in size to ours. There were 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A schools there and I thought we did real well," said Dailey.
The meet included a Kansas wildlife exam, a Kansas herpetology exam, a scavenger hunt where teams locate and retrieve Kansas plant samples through botanical knowledge, and an interpretive event where students interact with each other while portraying a Kansas animal.
The teams and individuals brought home a total of $675 in scholarship money and will send two teams to compete Nov. 3 in the state meet at Rock Springs 4-H Ranch near Junction City. This is the third time in the past four years that Goessel High School has won this regional.
