Goessel team topples Teutons

Goessel High School volleyball team defeated Remington and Inman Sept. 6 in volleyball action. None of the seniors on the Goessel team have been involved in a victory against Inman.
Brianna Unrau and Kory Hiebert each served over 90 percent with Unrau having three aces. Allison Banman garnered 45 assists for the evening as she set up Kory Hiebert and Courtney Berkholz with 17 kills each.
"Sarah Unruh came off the bench tonight and was a huge play-maker," head coach Crysta Guhr said. "It is great to start out 2-0."
The scores for the evening were: Goessel dominated Remington 25-14, 25-13. Goessel defeated Inman in a tight battle 25-20, 24-26, 25-23.
Saturday the Bluebirds hosted a six-team round robin tournament and Goessel finished in second place with a 4-1 record.
Goessel played well in the first match of the day against an evenly matched Wichita Independent team. The Bluebirds won 26-24, 24-26, and 25-22.
GHS continued their winning ways against South Haven 25-11, 21-25, 25-21. The Bluebirds dominated Burton 25-17, 25-13. Goessel got ahead of Sedgwick 17-7 but the Cardinals began to rally near the end of game one and kept the momentum for games two and three.
Goessel lost to Sedgwick 25-19, 13-25, 19-25. The last match for the Bluebirds was Halstead and Goessel coasted to a win 25-18, 25-11. Sedgwick won the tournament with a 5-0 record for the day.
The Bluebirds record is now 8-2 overall. Brianna Unrau was 73-74 serving for the day with 10 aces and led the team with 43 digs. Allison Banman had 89 assists as the kill leaders for the Bluebirds were Kory Hiebert with 49, Courtney Berkholz had 23 and Sarah Unruh 18. Hiebert had 36 blocks for the day.
The volleyball team had a league match with Moundridge and Ell Saline Tuesday, and will travel Saturday to Tescott for a tournament and then be at Berean Sept. 20 with a league match against Peabody.
