Several Goessel athletes have been improving their performances as the season nears the end.

At Friday's regional meet, the coaches look forward to seeing how many individuals will qualify for state, since they will be competing only against 1A schools at Madison. The top four finishers Friday advance to the state meet May 25-26 in Wichita.

On a beautiful spring evening, the 12-team Heart Of America League track meet Friday provided a lot of excitement for Goessel.

The final event of the evening was the highlight for the boys' team. In the 4x400-meter relay, "Berean claimed the win and a new meet record, but it was very satisfying to see that our time had also surpassed the previous record," said Coach Sandy Banman.

Several Bluebirds finished in the top three in their events.

Craig Banman and Brett Goerzen took first and second in the pole vault, Garrett Hiebert and Martin Koppitz took first and third respectively in the triple jump, and Sheldon Goerzen and Weston Hiebert took second and third in the 300-meter hurdles.

Garrett Hiebert won the javelin by more than 19 feet, and placed third in the 400m dash.

Kylee Nikkel earned second place in the shot put, Kristen Hoffman squeaked into second place in the 3200m run, and Tricia Fensky tied for third in the pole vault.
