Goessel volleyball plays hard as season nears end

Goessel defeated Bennington 25-21, 25-20 for the third time this season.
The match with Little River was a better display of intensity than last week's match with the Redskins, but the Little River won again 25-19, 25-20.
Goessel had a very balanced attack from its hitters as Karis Janzen and Katie Flaming each recorded eight kills, Rinda Duerksen seven, and Aspen Frey six.
Karina Harvey led the team with 15 digs, Jessica Goertzen dished out 27 assists, and Amy Brubaker was 20-20 serving with three aces.
Saturday, Goessel traveled to Ell-Saline to participate in the consolation round-robin, Heart of America League tournament.
The Bluebirds defeated Ell-Saline 25-22, 25-13 then Bennington 25-22, 25-13 and lost a close match with Peabody 23-25, 25-9, 22-25.
The Bluebirds now own a record of 16-18.
Harvey led the team with 26 digs, Goertzen led in assists with 46, while Duerksen recorded 15 kills and eight blocks.
Brubaker served 31-31 and Frey served 27-27.
"We are playing well right now heading into regionals and have more confidence in ourselves," Coach Guhr said.
The Bluebirds hosted the 1A regional tournament Tuesday.
Goessel was seeded fourth out of seven teams and in the first round faced Burrton for the second time this season. Only the top two teams from this regional tournament get to move on to sub-state.
