Goessel High School volleyball squad won two matches and lost one Oct. 4 on senior night at the Bluebird gym.

Goessel jumped ahead of Canton-Galva in the first match of the evening 8-2, and maintained a six or seven point advantage for most of the game, winning 25-15.

In the second game, Canton-Galva stayed close to the Bluebirds. The Eagles led 8-6 and 18-15, but the Bluebirds tied the game at 19. The game remained close until the end, with Goessel finishing the match 25-23.

Kory Hiebert was successful attacking the net and Courtney Berkholz had great blocks on defense.

GHS dominated Bennington in two games for the second match of the evening.

Goessel went ahead 8-3 in game one and only allowed the Bulldogs seven more points to win the match 25-10.

Mistakes hurt the Bennington girls in the second game and the Bluebirds took charge and never looked back, winning again 25-7.

The Bluebirds waited for Hutch Trinity to win a three game match with Canton-Galva then prepared for their last match of the night against the Celtics.

Goessel forced a Trinity time-out with a 10-3 lead in game one. But with the score 12-5, senior setter Allison Banman went down with an ankle injury. Jennifer Raymond took her spot and the Bluebirds never allowed Trinity to get closer than four points as they finished game one with a win of 25-19.

The Celtics jumped out to a 17-8 lead, but the Bluebirds got as close as 23-20 forcing another Trinity time-out. Goessel lost the match 25-21.

The Bluebirds again fell behind in the third game 19-9, but cut five points off the deficit before the game ended 17-25.

"Jennifer Raymond had a good night stepping into the setter role," GHS head coach Crysta Guhr said. "Our defense was much improved over last week, and that's what we wanted."

Hiebert had 27 kills and 13 blocks, Berkholz had 8 blocks and 9 kills. Raymond had 18 assists and Banman 29. Brianna Unrau and Berkholz each contributed 10 digs. Kylee Nikkel was 36-of-37 on serves and Brittany Voth was 22-22.

Goessel is now 18-6 overall and 7-4 in the HOA league.

GHS played Tuesday at Remington for its final regular season matches. The Bluebirds will participate in the league tournament Saturday at Sedgwick.

Goessel will play Tuesday in the 1-A regional volleyball tournament at Flint Hills High School in Rosalia.
