It was a high scoring game at Goessel on Friday night. Kurtis Duerksen took 12 seconds to run 55 yards when returning the opening kick-off all the way for a touchdown and the Fensky kick was good to make the score 7-0, but Centre answered right back with Seth Jirak going 52 yards to make the score 7-6.
A catch by Jake Unruh brought the Bluebirds back to the 24-yard line and several plays later Justin Fensky took the ball across the goal line and again the extra point kick was good giving the Bluebirds a 14-6 lead. Although Centre started with poor field position, Andrew Hajek caught a pass from Jirak and went 72 yards for another Cougar score. With 5:33 left in the first quarter the score was tied 14-14.
Nine seconds later, Brett Goerzen sprinted 60 yards to take the kick-off all the way for another touchdown and Ryan Janzen caught a pass for the extra point giving Goessel a 22-14 lead.
The first punt of the game came with less than 5:00 minutes left in the quarter and Goessel marched toward the goal line. Centre interrupted the drive by intercepting a Bluebird pass on their own five yard line. The Cougars were able to put together four first downs but were unable to score.
Goessel's first possession in the second quarter ended with a short punt that was downed on the two-yard line. Centre punted on fourth down and with 3:53 to play in the half, Adam Goering ran the ball four yards for a TD and the Fensky kick was good making the score 29-14.
The Cougars ate up a lot of clock and scored with 56 seconds left. Bryant Gutsch ran 11 yards for a touchdown, but the Bluebirds drove down the field using the sidelines to stop the clock and Ryan Janzen caught an 11-yard pass from Hiebert with 7.5 seconds to play. The half time score saw the home team ahead 36-20.
A Jake Unruh interception in the third quarter stopped a Centre drive. Travis Buller took a handoff five yards for another Goessel score and then Garrett Hiebert weaved 10 yards to make the third quarter score 49-20. Justin Fensky continued the scoring for the Bluebirds on a 14-yard run and Janzen caught another pass for the extra point. The Cougars put together a successful drive with Gutsch running in for the touchdown making the score 57-28.
Goessel put in new offensive players and with 40 seconds remaining in the game Travis Buller crossed the goal line from three yards out and Buller also carried the extra point making the final score 65-28. Goessel is now 3-1 for the season and will travel to Hope for a game Friday.
