Golf tournament benefits Legion baseball league

Staff writer

Hillsboro American Legion sponsored its fifth annual benefit golf tournament last Saturday. All the expenses for the American Legion baseball league are covered by the Legion, and the proceeds from the tournament are a big part.

"The big thing is that it raises money for the baseball league," said Gene Schafer, organizer of the event.

According to Schafer, a lot of the participants come back every year. "More than three quarters of the teams have been in the tournament since it began."

McDonalds donated the hamburgers and condiments for the barbecue which was held before the event. More than 100 burgers and brats were grilled for the golfers.

The three-person scramble got underway at 1 p.m. at the Hillsboro Golf Course with 18 teams participating.

The golfers do have the chance of winning "a little money back," said Schafer. The top three flights are paid.

In the championship flight Fleming, Fleming, and Watson placed first; Utting, Ray, and Hopkins, second; and Sims, Snelling, and Pendry, third.
