Goossen receives sister's memorial scholarship
Carmelita Goossen has been selected to receive the $500 Lucinda Goossen Memorial Service Scholarship to sponsor the service work she will be doing this summer in San Marcos, Guatemala, with the K-State Community Service Programs International Summer Teams.
This summer Goossen and her team will be working with the Calacirya Foundation, a non-profit organization with the purpose of increasing the development status of third world countries. The group will be undertaking many projects. Some of these projects include installing efficient wood burning stoves in the homes of indigenous Mayan people and working with the farmers of a local co-op to plant amaranth as an alternative food source.
This service scholarship has been developed in memory of Lucinda Goossen by the Goossen family with the contributions of numerous people who were impacted by Lucinda's life of service. The purpose of this scholarship is to help fund the service projects of others who will be doing service work for a period of longer than four weeks without receiving a salary or stipend.
Alexanderwhol Church Pastor Mark Wiens expressed his excitement to the family about the opportunities this scholarship brings to the congregation.
Carmelita Goossen said, "I am honored to received this scholarship. It is one of my greatest accomplishments. I hope that this will be an ongoing scholarship and that other members of the Alexanderwhol congregation will take advantage of the opportunities this scholarship brings and are able to have a service experience of their own."
