Graduation ceremonies start Saturday
Hillsboro, Goessel seniors get diplomas this Sunday, Saturday
Get ready for a flurry of caps, gowns, and diplomas — graduation time is here again.
This weekend will be a busy one for local high school seniors.
Commencement exercises for the Goessel High School graduating class are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at the GHS gymnasium. Business teacher and basketball coach Justin Coup will be the featured speaker.
Twenty-nine seniors will graduate, and among them are six joint valedictorians: Peter Goerzen, Tyler Huntley, Katherine Krehbiel, Kent Peters, Ben Schmidt, and Kelcy Voth.
At Hillsboro High School, commencement takes place Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Robert C. Brown gymnasium.
Sixty-three seniors will receive their diplomas, and some will find out whether or not they've won a number of awards and scholarships, including the annual Wiebe Scholarship. The founder of the scholarship, John Wiebe, is set to attend this year's ceremony.
Since grades are tallied right up until the final day of school, the valedictorians won't be announced until after classes Thursday. But at press time, the four candidates for joint valedictorians were Elise Matz, Alisa Jost, and Megan Vogel. Lisa Suderman is set to be salutatorian.
As keeping with the HHS tradition, there will be no main speaker other than HHS students. A reception for the graduates will take place immediately after the ceremony in the commons.
Marion and Peabody will hold graduation ceremonies at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Commencement exercises for Tabor College will take place Saturday, May 24, beginning at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium. Family and friends can meet their graduates in the grassy quad area right after the ceremony.
