Hair salon set to open next Monday
A new Hillsboro business partnership came about at an unusual place: the Hillsboro bowling alley. That's where Mecia Wares and Izzie Klassen unexpectedly met.
Fast-forward to today, and the two are ready to open a new hair salon. It's called "Inspirations," and its first day of business is Monday, March 3.
Wares, who is from Larned, has run a hair salon there for 18 years — a salon also called Inspirations. But when her husband began working for Bartel Construction last fall, Wares decided to open up a second salon here in Hillsboro.
Wares was interested in the small building on D Street formerly occupied by Braden's Computers. She went to the bowling alley to speak with the building's owner, Ray Funk, and that's where Izzie Klassen overheard her. Klassen asked Wares if she could use another stylist, and the rest is history.
Klassen has worked in the health care industry for 27 years, with the last five and a half of those as a nurse at the Hillsboro Family Practice clinic. She's also been a hairstylist part-time, and she once operated a salon out of her home.
Klassen has decided that styling hair is a better fit for her than nursing
"I was always uptight being a nurse," she said. "I love fashion, and scrubs are not fashion."
Klassen thought about opening a salon but didn't want to make a go of it on her own. It's always good to get feedback from a fellow stylist, she said.
"Two heads are better than one," Klassen said.
Wares, the owner of the salon, will continue to live in Larned and work in Hillsboro on a part-time basis, she said. She plans to work in the salon on the first and third weeks of each month, Monday through Friday from 12 to 7 p.m.
Wares hopes to move to Hillsboro permanently in a couple years once she builds up her clientele here, she said.
Klassen's hours will be Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. But both stylists are available at other times by appointment, they said.
"We want to be available," Klassen said.
Inspirations will offer a variety of services, from basic cuts to coloring to waxing. For more information, call 947-2221.
