The Goessel High School cross country team competed on Sept. 24 at Southeast of Saline High School.
Jennifer Schmidt and Linessa Duerksen earned second and fifth place medals, respectively, in the junior varsity girls race. Evan Fast garnered seventh place in the junior varsity boys' race and ran a surprising 20:24. Peter Goerzen led the varsity team with a 20:37 time, followed by Kent Peters, Lance Hiebert, and Jeremy Voth.
A sloppy course added to the memories for this season as the cross country team competed on Sept. 19 at Bluestem High School in Leon.
Schmidt chatted with a runner from Andale as the two led their race, and then Schmidt sprinted past her in the last 200 meters to win the first place medal in the girls' junior varsity race. Schmidt's time in the rain and mud was 14:52. Theresia Hoelzl earned the 25th medal in a time of 16:55.
The boys varsity runners did not finish among the medalists as Peters led the Goessel boys' team with a time of 20:55, Hiebert followed with a time of 21:09, Voth and Goerzen finished together with times of 21:37 and 21:38, respectively. Fast earned a fifth place medal in the freshman race with a time of 21:51.
The team will run today at Marion County Lake.
