Hillsboro Community Medical Center officials were enthusiastic about the turnout and results of their fourth annual HCMC Charity Golf Classic held last Friday.
According to CEO Mike Ryan and director of marketing and public relations Marsha Setzkorn-Meyer, a full field of 18 teams participated in the four-person scramble golf tournament.
"This is the first time we have had a full field," Marsha said, "and we are excited about this."
"We are absolutely pleased with the response this year," Ryan added.
The 62 participants, 50 males and 12 females, came not only from the Hillsboro and Marion area, but from Hiawatha, Cottonwood Falls, Topeka, Wichita, and Valley Center. One young man came from Buffalo, N.Y., to play on a team with his grandfather.
There also was one all-female team and three co-ed teams this year.
"I think they are starting to come to the golf classic because of the low price, the good golf course, and the nice prizes," Ryan said.
Approximately $7,000 was raised toward the purchase of ADA compliant automated doors between the hospital and the nursing home.
Golfers were shown items that were purchased with funds raised in previous golf tournaments that included a monitor unit and the new HCMC LTCU van, for example.
The team from Ballard Aviation/EagleMed won the event with a score of 54. Members included Jim Ballard, Charlie Ballard, Joshua Bryan, and Steven Henson.
The Cottonwood Falls team won second place with a score of 57. The three-time defending champions included Russ Mildward, Mike Rettele, Tom Robke, and Ed Linhart.
Other results of the golf classic were as follows: First flight — Trane team of Christian Knipp, Jim Knipp, Harvey Ray, and Herman Hoffman placed first on a score card playoff with a score of 64. Second place finishers were from Wichita and included former CEO Tom Faulkner and his son Tracy Faulkner and Mike Hand and Tom Kruse from Grant Thornton, LLC. They also scored a 64.
Second flight — Co-op and Countryside Feed team of Lyman Adams, Kyle Cederberg, Steve Hornbuckle, and DeLayne Herbel placed first with a score of 70. Second place finishers were from Wichita and included Randy Reed with his son David and Bill Berl with his grandson Dietrich Kuhlman.
The fifth annual HCMC Charity Golf Classic is scheduled for Aug, 12, 2005.
