HCMC recognized for care

Officials of Kansas Department of Aging will recognize Hillsboro Community Medical Center's long-term care unit Tuesday.

HCMC is one of 10 Kansas nursing homes to earn a 2005 award for Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas Nursing Homes (PEAK).

The presentation will begin at 2 p.m. at HCMC, and is open to the public.

According to Barbara Schoof Conant, director of communications, Kansas Department of Aging, the Hillsboro facility is the only hospital-based long-term care unit to receive the PEAK award in 2005. Staff-driven changes include the replacement of a traditional nurses' station with a sitting area and fireplace, and residents' rooms decorated to reflect individual tastes.

Living areas are referred to as "neighborhoods" or "communities" and welcome children and pets as visitors.

Also receiving the award this year are Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor; Lakewood Rehabilitation, formerly Friendship Manor Rehabilitation Center, Haviland; Golden Heights Living Center, Garnett; Medicalodge of Kinsley; Medicalodge of Wichita; The Cedars, McPherson; Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan; Pleasant View Home Inc., Inman; and Schowalter Villa, Hesston.

Sponsors of the PEAK awards are Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, St. Francis Health Center, Harrah's Prairie Band Casino, Heartland Sales and Chemicals, Golden Eagle Casino, Kansas Advocates for Better Care, and Health-E-Equip.
