HES sponsors Red Ribbon Week

Hillsboro elementary students and staff will celebrate Red Ribbon Week Oct. 25-29. This year's theme is "Drug Free - I have the Power."

Red Ribbon Week began in response to the tragic death of an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena.

The week celebration highlights positive choices and healthy, drug-free lifestyles.

In 1988, U.S. Congress issued a proclamation formalizing the last week of October as Red Ribbon Week.

Students have been taught throughout the month what drugs are, what are the effects, and what is a healthy lifestyle. Mike Moran, HES counselor has been using the health classes and the guidance classes to teach lessons from the "Life Skills" program for grades 3-5. And "Here's Looking at You" program for K-5.

Activities planned at the elementary school include: Monday — Red Ribbon Day. All students will wear red ribbons to show support for a drug-free lifestyle.

Fifth graders will organize refusal skits; fourth graders will write short essays; third graders will write poems; second graders will make a paper quilt; and first graders and kindergartners will color page posters.

Cafeteria personnel will serve a red food each day. A contest will be held to see who can remember what food was served on what day.

Tuesday — Live Healthy Walk Out on Drugs Day. Site council members will serve healthy snacks at the end of the day. At 6:30 p.m., all students, families, and community members will participate in a 30-minute walk at Tabor track.

Wednesday — Sock It to Drugs Day. Students will wear crazy socks to school. At 4 p.m. at the Tabor track students will run in the 10th annual drug-free half-mile run.

Thursday — Career Day. Becky Carlson will have high school students come speak during health classes about making good choices.

Teachers will have parents or community members talk about their professions.
