On a blistering hot and windy day, the Hillsboro High School track team finally were able to compete May 6, after being rained out of their own meet on April 30.
Again this year, the boys won first place as a team, smoking the competition by scoring 152.5 team points. Garden Plain was second with 85 team points followed by Cheney third with 80, Halstead fourth with 61, and Marion fifth with 47.5.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Derek Mayfield, Tyler Peachey, Brodie Unrau, and Caleb Marsh tied the record with a time of 44.03.
"This ties them with two other groups," head coach Dennis Boldt said. "Despite the wind and heat, there were some excellent times by many athletes at this meet."
On the girls' side, freshman Hannah Marsh broke the meet and school record in the long jump with a leap of 17'11". According to Boldt, this breaks Angie Helmer's record of 17'5".
The girls' team placed second with 103 team points following first place Garden Plain with Cheney placing third with 75, Hesston fourth with 71.5 and Smoky Valley fifth with 57.
Boldt was pleased with his student-athletes' performances.
"It is important to get good marks for regional seeding in races such as the 100, 200, 400, 4x100, and the 4x400 relay," he said. "We achieved some of these marks today."
The team competed Monday at the Conrad Nightengale Invitational that was rescheduled from April 23 because of heavy rainfall.
Results were not available at press time.
The team will go on to compete in the MCAA League meet at 4 p.m. Friday at Halstead.
