HHS boys, girls claim MCAA league title

Staff writer

What a difference a day makes! Wednesday and Thursday, Halstead and the surrounding area experienced torrential rains and flooding, but on Friday, skies were blue and temperatures almost perfect for the MCAA League track meet.

The Hillsboro boys again dominated at the 10-school league meet scoring 184 points followed by second place Sterling with 79, and third place Smoky Valley with 74.

This is the fourth consecutive time the boys have been league champions.

The Hillsboro girls placed first scoring 98 points and beating out rival Hesston who scored 91 followed by third place Lyons with 81.

This is the second time since 2002 the girls have been league champions.

The boys placed first in the high jump, discus, the 4x100-meter relay, the 1600m run, the 3200-meter run, and the 4x400-meter relay. They scored one-two in the 100-meter dash, the triple jump, and the 800-meter run.

"The key thing for us is that we have depth," head coach Dennis Boldt said. "That's how we were able to score a large number of points for the team."

The girls placed first in the high jump, the 100-meter dash, the 4x400-meter relay, and the 100m hurdles.

"We aren't as deep on the girls' team," Boldt said. "But taking first in some events and then scoring in the top three in other events made the difference for us."

Up next for the Trojans is regionals at 3 p.m. on Friday at Cheney. The top four in each event will go on to compete at state May 28-29 at Wichita State University.

"The Garden Plain and Cheney boys and the Garden Plain and Hesston girls will be the strongest teams at regionals," Boldt said.

Boldt hopes to qualify six to eight boys and three to four girls at regionals to advance to the state competition to be held next week.

Conrad Nightengale Invite

On May 10, the team traveled to Halstead to compete in the re-scheduled Conrad Nightengale Invitational track meet.

There were 14 schools competing at the meet.

The boys continued to dominate and won first place scoring 133 team points followed by Cheney second with 82 points and Garden Plain third with 80 points.

The girls placed second with 90 team points behind first place powerhouse Garden Plain with 136 and rival Hesston placed third with 71.
