Staff writer
The Hillsboro High School track team competed in its strongest meet Friday at the Smoky Valley Invitational track meet, according head coach Dennis Boldt.
The boys took first place with 132.8 team points. The girls placed second with 83.5 points.
Thirteen schools competed at the meet. Rounding out the top three finishers in the boys' division were Hillsboro, Minneapolis, and Abilene.
For the girls' division, Concordia was first, Hillsboro second, and Minneapolis third.
"The kids performed well against some of the strong teams competing that included Concordia, Minneapolis, and Abilene," Boldt said.
In the boys' division, Boldt highlighted the long distance running between Minneapolis and Ellsworth runners and Hillsboro seniors, Aaron and Daniel Yoder. Daniel broke his current record in the 800-meter run that he established at state last year with a time of 1:58.2.
According to Boldt, this was the season's best time and a new school record.
In the girls' division, senior Stephanie King scored second in the discus with a throw of 106-8.
A new record was set by freshman JuliAnne Chisholm in the high jump with a jump of 5-6. Freshman Hannah Marsh also set a new record in the pole vault clearing the bar at 10.
Other highlights for the girls were the one-two finishes in the hurdles by Chisholm and Tina Frick. Also a highlight for Boldt was the first place finish of the 4x400-meter relay team of Jessica Heidel, Kelsie Penner, Chisholm, and Marsh with a time of 4:15.55.
"I couldn't be more proud of these young people," Boldt said.
The varsity track team will compete Friday at the Conrad Nightengale Invitational track meet at Halstead. The meet begins at 3 p.m.
Members of the track team competed Tuesday at Marion. Results were not available at press time.
Canton-Galva Quintet
The track team competed at the Canton-Galva Quintet track meet hosted by Moundridge.
Teams competing were Hillsboro, Canton-Galva, Moundridge, Berean Academy, and Peabody-Burns.
Boldt's strategy for this meet was to put as many athletes as possible in events to give everyone on the team an opportunity to compete.
The boys won first place with 194 team points, and the girls took first with 139 points.
The strategy paid off. "The team scored well and in most of the events with multiple athletes," Boldt said.
"We had a successful day in spite of the cold temperatures," Boldt said.
