HHS cross country team wins Berean meet
Twelve of the 15 Hillsboro High School cross country runners ran their best times ever at the Berean Academy meet held Oct. 2 at Harvey County East Lake. Aaron Yoder, Danny Yoder, Kody Borg, Sean Leihy, Nate Holmes, Rick Johnson, Michael Bookless, Aaron Miller, Robert Jost, Tyler Peachey, Eric Weinbrenner and Zach Magnuson each set personal records at the meet.
The Trojans finished in first place with a time of 86:38. Hesston placed second and Mulvane, third.
The boys' varsity race was in a different format at the Berean meet. The number one runners from each school ran against each other in a separate race, the number two runners in a separate race and on through the number five runners. The winning team was determined by the total time of the five runners.
Aaron Yoder finished first in the number one race, and Danny Yoder finished first in the number two race. Magnuson finished first in the fifth race. Borg finished second in the number three race, and Leihy, second place in the number four race.
"The girls ran well also," said coach Stuart Holmes. "Many of them got their second best times of the year."
The girls' team took seventh out of 11 schools at the meet. Mandy Estus medaled at 15th.
"It was nice not to have a meet last Thursday," Holmes said. "We've been able to use the extra few days to get in a couple more quality workouts. Quality Workouts will result in quality races."
"Our runners were prepared mentally to compete. We saw that today with the outstanding places and times."
The junior varsity boys continue to improve with three medaling. Holmes took first, Johnson, second, and M. Bookless, 4th.
"Overall, it was an outstanding meet for our runners. Their physical and mental preparation combined with the cool temperatures, little wind, and a relatively flat course, produced some great times," said Holmes.
The courses the cross country team has left to compete on are all much more challenging with more hills. Cross country meets coming up are league, regional, and state.
