Hillsboro held off a pesky Southeast of Saline team for a 51-42 victory and a chance for a rematch with Hesston at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Hillsboro led 8-0 early in the game before a 5-0 run by the Southeast Trojans. At the end of the first quarter, Hillsboro was up, 14-9.

Southeast couldn't get any closer than three in the second quarter, and Hillsboro took a 26-22 lead into the locker room.

Coach Carolyn Long said in the beginning of the season, before Christmas break, the team was not winning, but they gradually got better.

"We were inexperienced, with a few sophomores and juniors, and a lot of freshmen, who had never played with each other," Long said.

"In the second half of the season, we were getting over the hump," she said. "And we were winning our games."

Long said that the coaching staff is excited about the next two or three years.
