HHS golfers capture two championships

The Hillsboro High School golf team placed first in two tournaments this past week, and individual golfers led the way.

On Friday, Elliott Soyez and Justin Kent were the first- and second-place finishers, and Daniel Kunantaev was fourth at the Sacred Heart Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

The two-man team of Soyez and Kunantaev placed first. The four-man team of Soyez, Kent, Kunantaev, and Darren Enns placed second.

"For the first time this season we had our top three golfers all shoot in the 70s," said coach Scott O'Hare. "That's something we've been expecting to do and should do."

On April 24, Hillsboro golfers won the Bennington Invitational at the Elks Country Club in Salina. Soyez placed second overall, Kunantaev was fourth.

Because of a thunderstorm, team and individual awards were based on the front nine holes. Officials called the golfers off the course with four holes left in the tournament.

"Most of the guys were playing much better on the back nine before the storms moved in," O'Hare. "I would have liked to have seen how we would have finished."

The team was scheduled to play at the Hesston Invitational Tuesday. The Trojans travel 10 miles east Friday, to the 36-hole Marion County Invitational, which begins at 8 a.m. at the country club.
