HHS golfers take ninth

Bina medals 14th at 36-hole tournament

In the blistering heat and strong winds, Hillsboro and Marion high schools hosted the Marion County Invitational Golf Tournament Friday at golf courses in both towns.

The Hillsboro team started the day playing 18 holes of golf in Marion and ended its day playing 18 holes in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro placed ninth with 716 team points, 348 in Hillsboro and 368 in Marion.

There were 16 schools competing. Rounding out the top three winners were Hesston, first with 624 team points; Wichita Collegiate, second with 642; and Marion, third with 656.

Andrew Bina was the only Trojan to receive an individual medal, placing 14th with an overall total of 164. Bina scored 82 in Marion and 82 in Hillsboro.

Marion Invitational

The team competed May 4 in the Marion High School Golf Tournament.

With 12 schools participating, Hillsboro won second place with its six-man team scoring 542. They placed second with the four-man team scoring 358; and third with the two-man team scoring 184.

Receiving individual medals were Randy Klassen who placed sixth with a score of 87 followed by Ricky Johnson who placed eighth with a score of 88.

Derek Hamm placed 12th, Lance Bartel 13th, Bina 16th, and Jordan Allen 17th.

The varsity team competed Monday in the MCAA League golf meet at Hesston. The junior varsity team also competed Tuesday in the Circle JV competition at El Dorado.

Regionals will begin at 7:30 a.m. May 17 at Medicine Lodge. The state tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. May 24 at Hesston.

"We have one of the toughest regionals around and we have some solid teams and some very competitive individuals on those teams," head coach Scott O'Hare said. "We will have to play well to make it to state."
