HHS harrier boys take first at Berean Academy
HHS takes home seven medals
Hillsboro High School cross country team competed Sept. 30 at Berean Academy. Approximately 14 teams competed at the meet.
The Hillsboro boys' team took first at the meet with an average running time of 18:06.
"For the varsity guys it was a dominant performance," Coach Stuart Holmes said. "Our guys took first out of 14 teams."
According to Holmes, the Berean meet was run in a unique format of total time in five separate races with a race for runners at each position one through five.
Kody Borg ran as the number one runner for the team and placed fifth with a time of 17:28.
Karl Magnuson ran as the second runner for the team and placed first with a time of 17:47.
Sean Leihy ran as the third runner and placed first with a time of 18:01.
Cody McMillen ran as the fourth runner and placed first with a time of 18:31.
Daniel Bookless ran as the fifth runner and placed first with a time of 18:42.
All varsity runners received medals.
In the junior varsity race, Nate Holmes took first place and received a medal with a time of 17:59, followed by Robert Jost who placed seventh and also received a medal with a time of 19:38.
Other runners competing were Jon Janzen, who placed 21st with a time of 21:10; Zach Magnuson, 25th with a time of 21:24; Clint Schneider, 43rd with a time of 22:39; Alex Jost, 48th with a time of 22:51; Gavin Serene, 49th with a time of 22:54; Tyrel Blecha, 54th with a time of 24:17; Lance Kliewer, 57th with a time of 24:32; and Zach Luthi, 62nd with a time of 25:23.
"The combination of some extra good workouts lately along with some determined, confident running led the boys to have a terrific meet," Holmes said.
"I have been especially pleased this season with the improvement and great attitudes that the freshmen boys have had and it was neat to see all five of them have their best time of the year at Berean," he said.
On the girls' side, the team placed seventh in a field of 14, scoring 160 points.
"Running especially well for the girls was Elissa Richert who had her fastest time of the season," Coach Holmes said.
Richert led the team placing 21st with a time of 15:02. Hannah Marsh placed 25th with a time of 15:14; Jacque Fisher, 30th with a time of 15:48; Greta Kliewer, 38th with a time of 16:21; Megan Peachey, 46th with a time of 18:06; and Megan McCarty, 49th with a time of 20:50.
The team competed Wednesday at Ellsworth. They will host the MCAA league cross country meet at 4 p.m. Oct. 14 in Hillsboro.
