HHS music students compete at Ellsworth

Hillsboro High School mixed chorus, concert choir, and concert band competed Wednesday at the state large group contest at Ellsworth.

The mixed chorus received a II rating, and the concert choir received a I rating. The choirs are directed by Lynn Just.

The HHS band competed well this year, even in the shadows of a developing new rating system the state will be using next year. In preparation for that new system they were judging hard this year. The new rating system will be a numerical system which most feel will result in lower ratings. At this year's contest only three bands received I ratings at the state contest in the 4A down contest at Ellsworth.

Therefore receiving a I meant superior and a II meant excellent. There were a large number of IIIs given to some of the bands. The HHS band improved in their concert playing and received an excellent rating this year.

Hillsboro High School music groups will be competing April 29 at the state solo and ensemble contest at Southeast of Saline High School. These musicians received I ratings at the regional level. A schedule of performance times is listed on the school website. The public is invited to attend.

Members of the Hillsboro concert choir will be traveling to Kansas City April 29-May 1 on a fine arts trip. The purpose of this trip is to expose students to music/theatre activities they may not have the opportunity to be involved in elsewhere.

Students will be involved in a mystery dinner theatre as actors and amateur sleuths, and will see an improvisation show. The highlight of the trip will be Sunday morning when the choir will be featured during the 10 a.m. service at St. Monica's Church at Kansas City. They also will be singing with the church's gospel choir as part of the service.
