HHS netters defeat Haven Tuesday
The Hillsboro High School volleyball team traveled on Tuesday to take on the Haven Wildcats at Haven. Hillsboro won both matches going to three games in each match.
"We played well," head coach Tina King said, "and the girls were aggressive.
"We need to work on keeping up our intensity, so we can win the first two games and not have to go to a third game," she said.
In the first match, Hillsboro won the first game, 25-13, but Haven came back and won the second game, 25-10. In the third game of the first match, Hillsboro won 15-8.
The Trojans had four players serving at 100 percent. Senior Alisa Prior was 16 of 16 with two aces, followed by junior Amy Duerksen with 12 of 12 with one ace.
Prior also led the team in digs with 10, and Duerksen made 33 of 35 sets with one assist for 94.3 percent.
Senior Katie Fast was 11 of 12 in attacks with six kills.
In the second match of the night, Hillsboro won the first game, 25-18 but again lost the second in a close one, 25-22. They won the third game 15-10.
Prior again led in serving making 18 of 18 with one ace for 100 percent. She also led in attacks with 12 of 13 with one kill.
Senior Danielle Goossen led the team in digs with six and was 33 of 35 in setting with one assist.
"We will now focus on the mental aspect of the game," King said. "As the program progresses we will be instituting more plays.
The team record is now 5-3.
The Trojans will compete for the first time at home this season Sept. 16 against Lyons. Match time is 5 p.m.
MCAA Tournament
Last Saturday, the Hillsboro Trojans competed in the MCAA pre-season tournament at Hesston. Hillsboro came away with a 1-3 record for the day.
In the first match against Lyons, Hillsboro lost 25-15. 25-15.
In their second match against Nickerson, Hillsboro won the first game 25-14, but lost the next two, 25-13, 15-11.
In the third match against Hoisington, the team lost 25-15, 25-12.
In their final match for the day against Halstead, the Trojans defeated Halstead, 25-12, 25-14.
Overall, the team totals for the tournament in serves were 124 of 132 with 12 aces for 93.9 percent.
They attempted 171 attacks with 111 good and 29 kills for a total of 81.9 percent. The team had a total of 82 digs with senior Alisa Prior leading with 22.
"It was a pre-season tournament on Saturday, and I feel we learned a lot about ourselves," coach King said. "We struggled at times but we never gave up."
"These girls have a great attitude and are ready and willing to work on our weaknesses and to develop into a hard-working team," she said.
"As a team they are seeing how fast paced volleyball is becoming and that if we are going to compete on that level, we need to execute every play and play a smart game," King said.
