HHS scholars finish fourth at regionals
Despite a 7-4 record and being the only team to defeat Rock Creek, the Hillsboro High School Scholars' Bowl team finished just one correct question away from qualifying for state.
The team of Cody Blackketter, Mathew Brown, Corissa Bartel, and Ben Bosworth finished 5-1 in pool play.
The team defeated Sedgwick, 50-10, Mission Valley, 60-50 on a tie-break, Riley County, 40-20, Northern Heights, 35-10, and Remington, 70-40, before losing a tie-breaker to Hutch Trinity, 50-40.
The championship round was pool play as well, as the Trojans went 2-3.
They defeated first place Rock Creek, 55-40, and Remington, 80-30, but lost to Hutch Trinity, 60-25, Council Grove, 40-30, and Wichita Collegiate, 65-20.
"The team had a good day and competed well," coach Stu Holmes said. "You can't get any closer to qualifying for state, and not make it, than our team did."
Had they answered one question correctly and Council Grove missed one more, HHS would have won the match, finished third, and moved on to state competition.
Holmes was still proud of his team, and wanted to recognized his seniors, Brown, Bartel, and Bosworth.
"The kids had an outstanding day to finish an excellent season, but just came up a little short of our goal of getting back to state," Holmes said.
