HHS students compete at MCAA weightlifting contest

Ten Hillsboro High School students competed in the MCAA League Weightlifting contest last Saturday at Sterling.

"I think they did fairly well," Kory Unruh, head coach said. "We did better than I thought we would."

For Hillsboro, Tiffany Knaak placed first in the light weight division and set a new record squat at 210 pounds. Amy Duerksen placed first in the power weight division and tied in bench at 145 pounds.

Derek Mayfield, Alisa Prior, and Whitney Washmon each placed second in their respective weight divisions.

Other individual results include: boys' divisions — Josh Jost (148-pound weight class), placed sixth with a total of 575, fifth in squat, 235, sixth in clean 170, sixth in bench 170; Derek Mayfield (165-pound), placed second with a total of 760, third in squat 295, third in clean 225, second in bench 240; Brian Thiessen placed fourth with a total of 820, fourth in squat 345, sixth in clean 250, fourth in bench 225; Wade Weibert (Heavyweight) placed fifth with a total of 735, seventh in squat 330, fourth in clean 225, sixth in bench 210.

In the girls' division — Tiffany Knaak (light weight) placed first with a total of 415, first in squat and a new record at 210, third in clean 110, fourth in bench 95; Mindy Munguya (light weight) placed seventh with a total of 295, sixth in squat 125, eighth in clean 90, eighth in bench 80; Alisa Prior (middle weight) placed second with a total of 425, second in squat 205, fourth in clean 110, first in bench 110; Amy Duerksen (power weight) placed first with a total of 505, third in squat 205, first in clean 155, first in bench 145, tying the record; Whitney Washmon (power weight) placed second with a total of 490, first in squat 235, fifth in clean 125, third in bench 130; Emily Ratzlaff (power weight) placed fourth with a total of 450, fourth in squat 195, fourth in clean 145, fourth in bench 125.

Unruh said some of the students were not able to compete because of the basketball tournament, but he hopes to have at least 10 to 15 students compete at the state weightlifting meet sometime in March.
