HHS teams take first at home meet

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School track team overwhelmingly won its quint meet this past Tuesday held at the Reimer Field on the Tabor College campus.

Competing at the meet were Little River, Marion, Sedgwick, Burrton, and Hillsboro.

With little or no competition, the girls' team took first place scoring 153 total points. In a decisively strong win, the boys also took first, scoring 168 total points.

According to Head Coach Dennis Boldt, the meet had many entries when first scheduled. But he found out later that the other coaches reported a "tremendous amount" of scratches when the teams arrived at the meet.

"There were many events in which there were few entries," Boldt said. "But our athletes performed well."

"We saw a good performance by Trista Hanley in the shot put with a personal best throw of 36'2.25"."

Hillsboro coaches encouraged their athletes to strive for personal best times, jumps and throws at the quint meet, in order to prepare for Friday's invitational meet.

The Trojans will host the James Thomas Invitational at 4 p.m. on Friday at Reimer field on the Tabor College campus.

On Thursday the team will travel to Hesston to compete in the Hesston meet. Starting time is 4 p.m.

Nightingale Invitational in Halstead

The high school track teams competed in the Conrad Nightingale Invitational track meet held last Friday at Halstead. On the cold and somewhat dreary day, athletes from 17 schools participated at the meet.

The boys' team placed first with a total of 91 points, defending their title at the Nightingale meet.

"These guys continue to have balanced scoring throughout the meet," said Coach Boldt.

Alan Yoder placed first in the 100 meter dash, setting a new school and Nightingale meet record with a time of 10.8.

Carson Greenhaw took first in high jump with a six-foot jump. Sheldon Funk placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 13'6".

The girls placed third with a total of 60 points behind number two Hutch Trinity with 66 and number one Conway Springs with 91 total points.

"The girls, once again, were led by the relay performances, having two second place finishes and one fifth place," said Boldt. "They scored extremely well at this meet, considering the number of entries."

Halstead Quint Meet

The team competed at the Halstead Quint meet on April 15.

Teams competing were Halstead, Haven, Hesston, Hillsboro, and Marion.

The Hillsboro girls took third place with a total of 28 points. The boys' team took fourth place with 37 total points.

"We did not take a full team at this meet, electing to hold out some of the individuals who will be competing in all of the upcoming invitational meets," Boldt said.

"The athletes who competed at this meet did an exceptional job," he said.

Hillsboro did not compete in any relays this meet.

Cheryl Prieb won first place in pole vault with a jump of 7'6", third place in the 800m run, and placed third in the mile. According to Boldt, this was Prieb's first time running in the mile with a time of 6:40.
