HHS: Tennis squad hosts triangular

The Hillsboro High School tennis squad has seen its share of ups and downs, even though the season has just begun.

Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Trojans began on a down note when they faced a hot Smoky Valley team in their first matches of the Hillsboro Triangular. The event took place at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.

Overall, Smoky Valley won seven matches out of nine. Hillsboro's wins came from No. 3 singles player Jessica Boese, who defeated Smoky Valley's Megan Olson 8-7, 7-3. Hillsboro's other winner was No. 6 singles player Angie Claassen, who defeated Samy Waite 8-5.

The opening matches against Smoky Valley were a disappointment to Coach Lynn Wiebe. The girls seemed flat-footed, she said.

But in their next round of competition against Wichita Collegiate, the team rallied back to win six matches out of nine.

No. 1 singles player Erin Wiebe defeated Collegiate's Stephanie Anderson 8-4, and No. 2 singles player Candace Barkman downed Sara Orsi 8-2. No. 5 singles player Kelsey Kaufman defeated Sanaz Sharifaie 8-0, clinching the Trojan's third singles victory against Collegiate.

Hillsboro did even better against Collegiate's doubles teams. The No. 1 doubles team of Wiebe and Barkman beat Collegiate's team of Gentry and Myer 8-7, 7-5. In No. 2 doubles, Boese and Kelli Just defeated Sharifaie-Smith 8-4. And in No. 3 doubles, Kaufman and Marci Wodke defeated Anderson-Orsi 8-7, 7-3.

Wiebe was very pleased with her team's performance against Wichita Collegiate, she said.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Hillsboro traveled to Hesston for the Hesston Invitational.

The Trojans didn't place at the event, which saw Claflin take first, Hesston second, and Smoky Valley third.

The varsity squad next faces Circle at Towanda this afternoon. Also today, the junior varsity squad will play at home.
