HHS tennis takes third at home tournament

Playing well and with increased intensity, the girls' tennis team took third in their own tournament at the sports complex on Thursday.

Hillsboro High School No. 1 singles player Gina Andrews finished in sixth place, losing to Circle and Hutchinson Trinity and defeating Sterling.

Danielle Hagen at No. 2 singles lost to Stuchlick of Circle and defeated Miller of Chapman and Roach of Sterling for a fifth place finish.

The No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Kaufman and Erin Wiebe defeated Sterling and Circle to reach the finals.

"This was a good outing for Kelsey and Erin," said coach Lynn Wiebe. "They played much harder in their first round matches which they struggled with early in the season."

Hillsboro entered two No. 2 doubles teams, and both teams won their first round matches to advance to the winner's side of the bracket.

Whitney Washmon and Lora Andrews won their first round match in a tiebreaker against the No. 1 seeded team from Circle. They then defeated Chapman to get to the finals and took second place after losing to Wichita Independent.

"This was an excellent outing for these two players," Wiebe said. "They have played junior varsity most of the season and certainly came out with a positive attitude and played their hardest."

The other No. 2 doubles team of Kelli Just and Emily Railsback defeated Hutchinson Trinity, lost to Wichita Independent, and lost to Chapman for a fourth place finish.

The junior varsity tennis team will compete at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 in the MCAA League tournament at Wichita.

The varsity tennis team will compete Saturday at the MCAA League tournament at Ellinwood. Game time is 9 a.m.
