HHS tennis team competes at Collegiate

Team wins Circle tournament

The Hillsboro High School girls' tennis team competed Tuesday at Wichita Collegiate in Wichita.

Of the six teams participating at the meet, Goddard placed first scoring 34, points, Newton was second with 24, Wellington was third with 22, Wichita Collegiate was fourth with 20, Hillsboro was fifth with 16, and Neodesha was sixth with 4.

In No 1 singles competition of Pool B, Emily Railsback placed fifth at the meet. She lost her first match against Wellington 8-2, and the second against Collegiate 8-1. In the match for fifth place, Railsback defeated Neodesha in a tiebreaker 8-7 (8-6).

According to head coach Lynn Wiebe, two of the best players in the state were at the meet, Kristin Beeler from Wichita Collegiate and Paige Mckinney from Newton.

"Emily played Beeler in her second round and did an excellent job of making Beeler work for every shot," Coach Wiebe said.

In the final match against Neodesha and down in the tiebreaker, "Emily played very determined and kept her chin up," Coach Wiebe said. "It was a nice win for her."

In No. 2 singles, Danielle Hagen placed sixth of the Pool A competition. In the first round, she lost to Newton 8-2 and in the third round 8-0 to Collegiate. In playing for fifth place, Hagen lost to Neodesha 8-6.

"Danielle has a very nice looking serve and the pace of her shots has improved over the season," Coach Wiebe said.

In No. 1 doubles Pool A competition, the team of Erin Wiebe and Lora Andrews placed third at the meet. Wiebe and Andrews lost their first match to Goddard 8-1, and won the second one, 8-2, against Collegiate.

In the match for third place, Wiebe and Andrews defeated Newton 8-5.

"Erin and Lora struggled against a very solid Goddard team in their first round," Coach Wiebe said.

In the final match against Newton, they came back from a 1-5 deficit to win 8-5.

"I was very pleased with their ability to come back," Coach Wiebe said.

In the No. 2 doubles of Pool B, the team of Kelsey Kaufman and Amanda Faber placed second. They won the first round against Newton 8-0, and won the second match against Collegiate 8-2. In the final match against Goddard for first place, Kaufman and Faber lost 8-0.

"These two have done well together in the last two meets," Coach Wiebe said.

The varsity team will play at 3:30 p.m. today at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.

Circle Tournament

The varsity girls traveled to Towanda Thursday to compete in the Circle tennis tournament.

Hillsboro placed first at the meet scoring 25 points followed by El Dorado placing second with 20, Circle placing third with 10, Wichita Independent placing fourth with six, and Hutch Trinity placing fifth with four.

"It was a good feeling to win this meet," Coach Wiebe said. "It was not the toughest meet that we have had this year, but it was rewarding to win the necessary matches and earn the points needed to take first place in this meet."

In No. 1 singles, Railsback won first place. She won 8-3 against Wichita Independent in the first round, won by default against Hutch Trinity and Circle in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, and won 8-5 against El Dorado in the fifth round.

In No. 1 doubles, Hillsboro's team of Wiebe and Andrews placed second. They won 8-3 against Circle and lost 8-3 against El Dorado in the second round. Andrews and Wiebe went to win the third round against Wichita Independent 8-2 and won against Hutch Trinity 8-5 in the fifth round.

In No. 2 singles, Hagen took third at the Circle tournament. In the first round she lost to El Dorado 8-5, but won by default against Wichita Independent in the second round. In the fourth round, Hagen lost to Hutch Trinity in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-3). She went on to win her last match of the day against Circle 8-2.

In No. 2 doubles, the team of Kaufman and Faber placed first in the tournament. In the first round, Kaufman and Faber won by default against Hutch Trinity. In the second round, they won a tiebreaker against Circle 8-7 (7-1). In the third round, the duo won 8-2 against El Dorado and finish the day defeating Wichita Independent 8-0.
