The Hillsboro High School track teams took a one-two finish at the 3A regional track meet held Friday at Cheney. The boys placed first and the girls second.

With 81 team points, the Hillsboro boys were followed by second place Holcomb with 67 points and Cheney with 65.

"We knew going into regional competition that points were going to be tight," head coach Dennis Boldt said.

The girls' team managed to place second scoring 69 team points against a strong Garden Plain team that took first with 125 points. Holcomb placed third with 58 points followed by fourth place Hesston with 54.

"We were very pleased with the girls to be among the top two," Boldt said.

HHS athletes placed in the top four of their individual and team events and advanced to state competition to be held Friday and Saturday at Wichita State University.

A total of 12 boys and six girls from Hillsboro, including the alternates, will travel to Wichita to compete at the state track meet.

Competition begins for 3A, 2A, 1A schools from 3 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and will continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

At regionals in Cheney, the boys' relay teams continued to dominate their competition.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Derek Mayfield, Caleb Marsh, Brodie Unrau, and Tyler Peachey placed first with a time of 44.10.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Aaron Yoder, Peachey, Marsh, and Daniel Yoder also placed first with a winning time of 3:30.40.

"We were not looking to win first place as a team," Boldt said. "Our main focus at regionals is to qualify as many athletes as we can for state."

On the girls' side, JuliAnne Chisholm placed first in the high jump with a jump of 5'2", while teammate Hannah Marsh placed first in the long jump with a jump of 16'5".

What are the coaches' expectations for their team at the state level?

"Both the girls' and the boys' teams have an equal chance of placing in the top three," Boldt said.

"Our boys have a lot of experience and coming back to state, they have an opportunity to place at state," he said.

"We just hope our kids have their best day at state."
