HHS varsity girls win Tuesday at home

The Hillsboro High School girls' basketball team improved their record to 3-3 by winning their first two games after the Christmas break. The Trojans defeated Ellinwood, 35-29, Tuesday night at home.

Junior Emily Ratzlaff put Hillsboro on the board first with a basket less than a minute into the game. But Ellinwood matched the Trojans and led 9-8 with a minute left in the quarter. A steal by Katie Fast and a bucket by JuliAnne Chisholm put Hillsboro ahead at the end of the first quarter 10-9.

The scrappy Ellinwood team scored first in the second quarter and went ahead of the Trojans with five minutes left in the half. Hillsboro came right back on two points by Chisholm, assisted by Hannah Marsh. A steal and a basket by Fast put the Trojans up by three. However, the Eagles wouldn't quit, and the half-time score was Hillsboro 18, Ellinwood 17.

"Ellinwood is an aggressive team," coach Becky Carlson said. "We did what we had to do to win. We held on to the ball and made our free throws."

The Trojans were four of six from the free throw line which is an improvement over past games.

One area Hillsboro did not improve on was turnovers. They team had 21 turnovers for the night.

"We are learning that every possession counts," Carlson said. "We played good defense and held on to get the win."

Ellinwood took the lead after a Hillsboro turnover and a bucket by the Eagles three minutes into the third quarter. Junior Marissa Diener hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter and put the Trojans up for good. Ellinwood got within three in the fourth quarter, but Ratzlaff sealed the victory, hitting three of four free throws in the last seconds of the game.

Fast led the team with 16 points, three steals, seven rebounds, and five blocked shots.
